这山里果然有个白骨精，她想着：“听说吃了唐僧肉能长生不老呢。”趁悟空离开，她便要扑下去抓唐僧，却被圆圈发出的金光刺得头昏眼花。白骨精便变作一个美貌女子，只说给和尚送饭，想要接近唐僧。那八戒见到女人骨头都酥了，哪里还识得妖精。这时悟空回来了，他那火眼金睛却难蒙骗，举铁棒便朝妖精打去。那妖使个“解尸法”，扔下假尸首，真身逃走了。
眼看那女子死在地上，唐僧责怪悟空又伤人命。悟空就让师父看那“送饭”罐子，里面全是些蛆虫、癞蛤蟆。唐僧刚有几分相信，八戒又来挑唆：“这是师兄的障眼法！”唐僧便要赶走悟空。悟空再三哀求，才得饶恕。
白骨精不死心，又变成老婆婆，一路喊着：“女儿啊，你在哪里？”八戒说：“师父，这下麻烦大啦。”老婆婆看见地上的假尸首，一把揪住唐僧，“我女儿怎么死的？我要你偿命来！”却又被悟空识破，劈头一棒，那妖精还用解尸法脱身走了。
唐僧大惊，“你怎么连伤二命！”便把紧箍咒连念二十遍，把个猴头勒成个葫芦，疼得悟空满地打滚。唐僧说：“你是无心向善，有意作恶，我断然不能留你了！”悟空说：“师父真不要我，就请念念‘松箍咒’，把这箍子退下来，我好回家。”唐僧为难道：“我可是只会紧，不会松。”“既然这箍子没法离开我，”悟空说，“我也就没法离开师父了。”唐僧见悟空这样说，只好再饶他一次。
那妖精两次没得手，心想：“再往西四十里，就不是我的地盘了。要是唐僧被别处妖魔捞了去，就太可惜了。”于是她第三次变作一个老翁，一路叫着：“女儿呀！老婆呀！”再来算计唐僧。八戒说：“师父呀，人家找来了！你该偿命，我该充军，沙和尚做苦工，那猴子却溜得快！”悟空叫来山神、土地暗中照应，再不让妖精逃脱。只见手起棒落，老翁倒下。
悟空说：“师父，你看！”地上躺着一堆骷髅。“这是白骨成精。”唐僧已经相信了，又听八戒说：“师兄是怕你念咒，故意变成这样。”唐僧便下定决心，找出纸笔，写了一张贬书给悟空，“再不要你做徒弟了，去吧！”悟空很伤心，他嘱咐沙和尚要照顾好师父，“遇见妖怪就说老孙是你的大师兄，他们就不敢乱来了。”悟空要最后拜别师父，但师父不要他拜，他只得变几个替身团团围住，使唐僧勉强受了一拜。
赶走悟空后，唐僧又在碗子山波月洞的黄袍怪手下遭难。沙和尚被擒，八戒逃出，没奈何，这呆子只得厚厚脸皮去花果山讨救兵。悟空问八戒：“不去取经，来这里做什么？”八戒扯个谎：“师父想你呢。”“既然赶走，还想什么？不去！”八戒怕打，只得下山去，嘴里骂骂咧咧。
悟空早派了小猴偷听，便把八戒抓回要打，八戒只得说出师父遇难的事。悟空说：“你们为什么不告诉妖怪，老孙是唐僧的大徒弟？”八戒使个激将法，“他一听你的名字，就说要剥你的皮，抽你的筋！”悟空大怒，便随八戒去打黄袍怪。双方相斗，悟空使出一招“叶底偷桃势”，妖怪竟被打得无影无踪。后来查明此怪乃是天上星宿奎木狼下凡。
悟空救出师父，唐僧又感激，又悔恨。
